Noah
by Brad Scott
The last of our fathers listed in the genealogy of Seth in Bere’shiyt (Genesis) chapter five is Noah. Noah comes from the word noach (נוח) in Hebrew and means rest or comfort. You can find Noah's name in many places in the Tanakh.
Bere’shiyt 8:4And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
Shemot (Exodus) 20:11For in six days YHVH made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore YHVH blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
A beautiful picture comes into focus that began with Adam and has ended in rest with Noah in Bere’shiyt chapter five. When placing all the names together in Hebrew and in just the order they appear we see another testimony of the absolute design of the Word in YHVH.
- Adam --- Man
- Seth --- (is) appointed
- Enosh --- mortal
- Kenan --- sorrow
- Mahalalel --- (but) the blessed God
- Jared --- shall come down
- Enoch --- teaching
- Methuselah --- his death shall bring
- Lamech --- the despairing
- Noah --- rest
